Whenever the month of October arrives, beer lovers will rejoice! That is because of Oktoberfest. For newbies, Oktoberfest is a German beer festival and travelling fun fair that usually takes place from mid-September to early October. This tradition has spread throughout the world and has even landed in Singapore.
Here are some mind blowing facts about Oktoberfest:
1.Oktoberfest actually began as a wedding celebration!
The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 in celebration of the marriage between the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities started on 12 of October and lasted for 5 days.
2. Oktoberfest was initially non-alcoholic
Believe it or not the largest beer drinking festival began without beer. Previously it was a mixture of an agricultural show and other amusements. Beer was sold and enjoyed outside of the festival grounds.
3. No Munich brew no Oktoberfest
There is one rule that makes or break Oktoberfest. All beers available in Oktoberfest must be from one of six of Munich’s breweries. Most importantly, they need to pass the Reinheitsgebot or “purity law” enacted back in 1516 to ensure quality of the beer. We expect no less from the Germans.
4. The Mayor Tap
Every year in Munich, the Mayor will tap the first keg of beer and declare “O’zapft (“It’s tapped!”) before anyone is allowed to start drinking. One wonders what will happen to those who don’t abide by this law.
5. Oktoberfest is all about love!
As surprising as it maybe, Oktoberfest is all about love! Every year during the festival, “Lebkuchen” or hearts (made from gingerbread), are hung everywhere inscribed with proclamations of love. What better way than to confess your love for that special someone isn’t it?
